Bicton Park Botanical Gardens: a varied day out

Bicton gives a mixed-interest family several ways to spend a day in East Devon. One person can linger among trees and glasshouses while others make for the play areas. The countryside museum and woodland railway add further options, so the visit can work for a party whose interests do not all match.

From Primrose Cottages, treat Bicton as a separate garden outing. The railway has its own operating arrangements and charges; it is worth choosing a day when it runs if that is the main attraction for your group. Indoor facilities offer shelter, but much of the park remains outdoors.

Children, dogs and paths

The indoor play rules distinguish the main area for under-12s from the toddler area for children aged five and under. Adults remain responsible for supervision. The gardens also contain open water.

Dogs must stay on short leads and cannot enter the children's play areas. The Orangery is the designated dog-friendly dining space. Dogs cannot be left unattended, so a group using play areas needs someone to remain with the dog.

There are slopes and steps, with an Easy Path serving some lower areas. Read Bicton's visitor rules alongside its opening information. Our family cottage guide helps compare bedroom layouts for your stay.
