Exploring Honiton
View full photoHoniton rewards a visit beyond the shopping list. Its museum tells the story of the town’s lace makers, while Thelma Hulbert Gallery presents contemporary art in a different part of the centre. Both give a stay at Primrose Cottages a connection with local life beyond the landscape.
Lace, pottery and an unexpected fossil
Allhallows Museum is on the High Street. Its lace collection traces work from the seventeenth century onwards, alongside local pottery and archaeological objects. The Honiton Hippo display has a very different origin: fossil remains discovered while the bypass was being built. It gives children a reason to look beyond the lace cabinets.
Art on Dowell Street
Thelma Hulbert Gallery combines temporary exhibitions with a collection of the artist’s own work. Admission is free, and its programme includes workshops and family activities. Booking can apply to events even when visiting the gallery costs nothing.
This is a practical choice for a rainy part of the day, with each venue’s opening calendar deciding the plan. If the weather clears, Combe Wood offers a separate woodland walk near town. Our self-catering cottages near Honiton give you an Upottery base for both kinds of outing.
