A day in Lyme Regis
View full photoAt Lyme Regis, a seaside outing can turn into a conversation about what lived here millions of years ago. Mary Anning’s discoveries give the town a story that curious children can follow, while the harbour and seafront offer a coastal day for visitors with no particular interest in fossils.
Start with the town’s fossil history
Lyme Regis Museum occupies the site of Mary Anning’s former home. Its displays connect the coast with her work and the history of the town. Museum-led fossil walks are booked separately and have their own dates and suitability guidance.
A guided walk is especially useful if you want to understand what you are looking at on the shore. It does not make every beach visit safe in every tide or weather condition. Follow the organiser’s instructions and current local warnings.
Harbour or museum day?
The Cobb and seafront give a visit an outdoor focus. In wet weather, the museum provides an indoor reason to travel from your Upottery cottage, provided it is open for your date. Keep cliff bases and edges clear and use official tide information before beach exploring. Our Jurassic Coast overview compares Lyme with Sidmouth if you are choosing just one coastal outing during your stay.
