Otterhead Lakes: a woodland and waterside walk
Otterhead Lakes follows water through the remains of a Victorian estate. Its short circular route passes wet woodland, streams and more open ground, giving you several habitats to look at within a modest distance. This is a useful contrast to the exposed hillfort walks during a stay at Primrose Cottages.
The official Blackdown Hills route is approximately one mile. There is a gradual descent from the car park and a short steep section partway round. Mud and bumps can make the going less straightforward than the distance suggests.
Watching the water and woodland
The landscape authority records kingfishers, dippers and wagtails among the reserve's birds. Bring binoculars if you enjoy identifying movement along a stream, but expect the wildlife to determine what you see.
Dogs must remain on leads because birds nest on the ground. Stay on the route and leave animals space. The official walk page provides a map and directions from the car park.
Couples and families comfortable with natural paths can make this the focus of a short outing from Upottery. See our wildlife holiday guide for other habitats to explore during your stay.
