A day in Sidmouth
View full photoSidmouth gives a coastal day several possible starting points. You can follow the Esplanade beside the bay, head up to Connaught Gardens or leave the seafront for the riverside landscape of The Byes. It is a different setting from the Otter Valley views at Primrose Cottages.
Gardens above the sea
Connaught Gardens sits above the western end of the Esplanade. Its planted areas and outlook suit visitors who enjoy gardens as much as the beach. Jacob’s Ladder connects this part of the coast by stairs, so anyone avoiding steps should plan their route using current town access information.
Blackmore Gardens is in the town centre. The Byes follows the River Sid inland through green space, with an orchard and meadow areas. These give you alternatives to spending the whole visit on the seafront.
Making a town day of it
Choose Sidmouth for a mixture of shopping, cafés and outdoor time, particularly when people in your party have different interests. Beach dog rules vary by area and season; the town’s visitor information provides the relevant guidance. For an animal-focused outing in the same wider area, read our Donkey Sanctuary guide. The sanctuary is a separate visit, not an attraction on the Esplanade.
