Walking around Honiton

Walking around Honiton

Two walks near Honiton give you a useful choice: stay beneath the trees at Combe Wood or climb onto higher ground at Dumpdon Hillfort. They suit different amounts of energy and different weather. Both can be considered during a stay at Primrose Cottages near Upottery.

A short woodland circuit

Combe Wood has a one-mile National Trust trail starting from a roadside lay-by. Its gentle slopes make it a shorter outing, although mud can affect the paths. Bluebells bring spring interest, and woodland birds give you something to listen for outside the flowering season.

A hilltop with an older story

Dumpdon has Iron Age earthworks above the Otter Valley. Reaching them involves an uphill walk. Small parking areas limit how many cars can arrive, so follow the land manager’s directions and keep access clear. Cattle may graze the site.

Dogs must stay on leads at both places. For a visit with a pushchair or mobility requirements, read the relevant terrain details before choosing; a short distance does not guarantee a suitable surface. Combine a walk with Honiton’s museum or gallery on their opening days. For a longer countryside circuit, see the Broadhembury and Dalwood options.
