A day in Exeter
View full photoExeter brings a city day into a countryside holiday. From your base near Upottery, you can make the trip for a particular exhibition, historic building or an afternoon around the shops. It is especially useful when you want an indoor attraction with other things to do nearby.
A museum at the centre of the day
The Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery, usually called RAMM, is on Queen Street. Its collections and changing exhibitions cover a much broader range than Devon history alone. Families can use its activity programme to choose a visit that interests the children.
Exeter Central station is close to the museum, and RAMM publishes directions for rail, bus and car visitors. Its opening pattern includes a Monday closure, so use the current calendar when planning around a particular exhibition.
History and the quayside
Exeter Cathedral is another focus for visitors interested in architecture. Visit Exeter also lists guided walks, the Underground Passages and the quayside. Each has different access and booking arrangements. Choose a main visit, then use the city map to connect it with lunch or browsing. For a smaller town outing closer to the cottage’s local area, Honiton’s museum and gallery offer a different scale of day.
